What Is Y2K Fashion & How To Wear It In 2021?

It’s everywhere and you must be wondering why are influencers obsessed with it. What the hell is Y2K fashion and how can you pull it off in 2021?

What is Y2K Fashion?

The Y2K aesthetic is named after the “Millenium bug” which caused a worldwide scare as the year 2000 was approaching. The trend is heavily inspired by the late 90s and early 2000s.

Y2K trend took off again during the lockdown in 2020 as our lives started revolving around technology once again. Just like early 2000s when everyone had cool flip phones and internet had just become a thing.

Fashion in that decade was intended to be futuristic and tech inspired. Most of Gen Z missed out on these fashion trends. So, they took this nostalgia and channelised it into bringing back Y2k.

Who inspired this trend?

The fashion back then was dominated by pop culture divas like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child, J Lo. Other big influences included Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, Bratz Dolls and movies like Mean Girls.

The main components of this style were shiny, metallic fabrics, statement and quirky pieces of jewellery, chunky boots, and flip phones, of course.

What you need to add to your wardrobe?

1. Pleated Skirts

Short pleated skirts were big in the late 90s and early 2000s. Cher in Clueless rocked some really nice pleated skirts in checked print.

2. Ribbed Cardigans

Cropped ribbed cardigans with a pair of jeans looks y2k chic. You can also style these cardigans with skirts.

3. Bell Bottoms

Of course bell bottom jeans and pants are back, y2k or not. But they were especially popular during this phase back then.

4. Mini Shoulder Purses

If there’s one thing I absolutely love from this trend, it has to be the mini shoulder purses. They look super cute and chic. And you can rock them with almost any kind of outfit.

5. Bling Accessories

Y2K fashion is all about getting away with really bold and in your face kind of stuff. So style up with quirky big bold statement pieces or bling hair accessories.

6. Velour Tracksuits

In early 2000s, velour suits and juicy couture was the street style staple for many pop culture celebrities. These were super stylish back then and were very popular.
